Elverhoj Colony of Artists and Craftsmen was founded in 1912 by Anders Andersen and Johannes Morton, along with a group of craftsmen, followers of the Arts and Crafts Movement, passionate about reviving quality handcrafted decorative arts in the face of increasing industrialization. Elverhoj’s motto was “live close to nature for inspiration” the picturesque rolling hills overlooking the Hudson River was the perfect location.
Elverhoj welcomed artists across many disciplines, and was well known for its metalwork, jewelry-making, tapestry-weaving, painting, and etching. Elverhoj would come to produce a number of theatrical performances. Patrons traveled to the colony from Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, New Paltz and New York City to enjoy theater performances, exhibitions, concerts, classes and lectures.
Today, we carry on the tradition of handicraft as artists and craftsmen. We find the spirit of the Elverhoj lives on here, with the many artists of the Uribe family. Alex and Lesli Uribe have made Andersen's cottage into their permanent residence and in-home custom framing showroom. They continue to make art and craft quality frames, carrying on the tradition of handicraft.
